Planning in action . . .

Sculptor Michael Ciccone and I met with some members of the Momentum Committee last Sunday to look at potential sites to place his sculpture, “Momentum.” Looking at possible locations on the Poughkeepsie side approach to the Walkway (starting from the parking lot), we found five different possible locations, with the current favorite being near the signal light that still remains on site. All sites were photographed, and now I’m working in Photoshop to try to virtually place the sculpture in each location, so we can see what it would really look like in each place.

All of this is in preparation for a big meeting we have coming up next week. On Thursday, January 20, we will meet with representatives of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, which oversees the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. Michael will share images and video of his work on the demolition of the old railroad bridge, and how he came to re-use some of the discarded materials to create his new series of sculpture, including “Momentum.” Other members of the committee will discuss their interest in the sculpture and their reasons for wanting to bring it to the Walkway. We will present the images of how the sculpture will look at the site and discuss which location would be best, and what steps must be taken to install and maintain the sculpture.

As soon as I complete those images placing the sculpture at the site virtually, I will share them here!

The transformation of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge into Walkway Over
the Hudson has captivated people’s imaginations, if foot traffic numbers
are any indication. Come hear the fascinating story of yet another
transformation of the old bridge. Michael Ciccone, who lives and works
in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, derives inspiration from found
metal objects and the landscape, culture and history of the Hudson River
Valley. All of these influences come together in the Bridge Project. As
he helped transform the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge into Walkway Over
the Hudson State Park, Michael has been inspired to transform some of
the 19th century steel into sculpture.

Please join the Momentum Committee, Mayor John Tkazyik, Benjamin Krevolin, Fred Schaeffer, Jean McAvoy, Elizabeth Waldstein-Hart, artist Michael Ciccone and others for the unveiling of “Momentum”, a new sculpture temporarily installed on the lawn of the Cunneen-Hackett Art Center. The Momentum Committee is offering the public a rare opportunity to see this unique and graceful sculpture made of actual discarded and recycled steel and copper obtained from the Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge by Mr. Ciccone, a master blow torch welder, during the construction of the Walkway Over the Hudson in 2009.

Mr Ciccone, of Saugerties, creates intriguing outdoor metal sculptures and spent several months with his blow torch cutting off large portions of rusted and unwanted steel beams and hardware from 230 feet above the Hudson River. Michael re-fabricated the 122 year old steel into highly stylized abstract sculptures that incorporate beautiful sections of patinaed copper. “Momentum” is a large free-standing heroic work which echoes the powerful wheels of a locomotive with a twisted dark plume of simulated smoke arching over the length of the work toward the rear of the ten foot high sculpture.

In September 2009, artist and curator, Franc Palaia included “Momentum” in his Quadricentennial exhibition about Hudson Valley bridges at the G.A.S. Gallery where it stood regally outdoors in the gallery courtyard for two months. All who saw the work were struck by its originality and novelty, a sculpture literally made from a bridge and not just about a bridge! Nobody is making sculpture like this except Michael, especially using finite materials that will never be seen again.

The Momentum Committee is seeking support and funds to purchase and install this important work of art in order to have it permanently placed at the entrance of the Walkway Over the Hudson at the Poughkeepsie entrance ramp in 2010.
